These are the 8 best hospitals in SC for 2025, new federal data shows
There are dozens of South Carolina hospitals, and some offer better care than others.
The United States Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently updated its overall ratings for more than 4,000 hospitals, which evaluate 100 quality measures in five groups: timeliness and effectiveness of care, safety of care, patient experience, readmission and mortality.
Only about 10% of hospitals nationwide earned the distinction of five out of five stars in overall ratings. Of the 66 hospitals rated in South Carolina, eight earned top marks. A hospital’s score reflects how it performed in areas of quality, like safety of care, readmission rates and treating heart attacks and pneumonia.
Hospitals were also scored on patient survey ratings evaluating hospital care experiences. Recently discharged patients were surveyed on topics like hospital staff’s responsiveness to needs, cleanliness, quietness and communication between doctors and nurses.
Just two South Carolina hospitals earned perfect five-star ratings in the patient surveys, Columbia SC VA Medical Center and Mount Pleasant Hospital.
