Arrest made after woman killed and man injured in shooting, SC sheriff says

The day after a woman was killed and a man was injured in a shooting in South Carolina another man was arrested, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Fred Gause Jr., 43, was charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said Tuesday in a news release.

The shooting happened Monday in the 100 block of Haygood Road, the sheriff’s department said. That’s in a part of Blythewood between Hard Scrabble Road and Interstate 77.

At about 5 p.m. Monday, deputies responded to a shooting and found two victims that had been shot in the upper body, according to the release. A woman was dead and a man was hurt and taken to an area hospital, the sheriff’s department said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the woman.

Further information on the man’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

The shooter left the area before the deputies arrived, according to the release. The sheriff’s department said information provided by the community allowed investigators to quickly identify Gause as the gunman.

Deputies learned that Gause is known to frequent the Haygood neighborhood although he does not live there, according to the release. Richland County court records list Gause’s address in the 300 block of Trotter Road in Columbia.

Information about where Gause was taken into custody was not available. There was no word on a motive for the gunfire or if Gause had any connection to the victims, but the shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s department.

Gause was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release. No bond has been set and Gause remains behind bars, jail records show. Following a bond hearing, Gause is scheduled to appear again in court on Nov. 21, Richland County judicial records show.

Anyone with information about the deadly shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 803-576-3000, Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, or submit an online tip.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.
