One man is dead and another is in jail following an argument, SC sheriff says
One man was killed Saturday in a shooting and another is in a South Carolina jail, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Rodney China, a 51-year-old Rembert resident, was identified as the victim, the sheriff’s office said Sunday in a news release.
China had been involved in an argument with an acquaintance, later identified as 38-year-old Rembert resident Quinshaun Dais, that turned deadly, according to the release.
At about 3:45 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a call about a shooting in Rembert where they found China’s dead body, the sheriff’s office said. The shooting happened at 205 Louis Circle, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.
Witnesses told investigators that a verbal dispute between China and Dais escalated into a physical altercation, according to the release. Information about why the men were arguing was not available.
During the fight, Dais is accused of firing several shots from a gun, striking and killing China, the sheriff’s office said.
No other injuries were reported.
Dais was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder as well as possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the release. He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where he is being held while waiting for a bond hearing.
Following a bond hearing, Dais is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 12, Sumter County court records show/
Despite Dais’ arrest, the shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office and coroner’s office. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Coroner Robbie Baker said.
“This was totally avoidable and unnecessary,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said in the release. “It was an argument that could have remained civil. Instead, the argument turned into assault, and the suspect then resorted to deadly force. ... People must learn to communicate and never resort to gun violence.”
