Richland County deputies find body, then track down his killer, SC sheriff says

A man died in a shooting in South Carolina over the weekend, and a search for his killer resulted in an arrest, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

The deadly shooting happened Nov. 29 in the 300 block of Percival Road, the sheriff’s department said Tuesday in a news release. That’s in a part of Columbia near Exit 12 on I-77 and Fort Jackson.

At about 10 p.m., deputies responded to reports of a shooting and found an unresponsive man, according to the release. The man had been shot in the upper body and died at the scene, the sheriff’s department said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim.

No other injuries were reported.

Although he left before deputies arrived, 26-year-old Mario Baca Corrales was identified as the shooter, the sheriff’s department said. On Monday, he was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the release.

Deputies located Baca Corrales at an acquaintance’s home in Summerville, the sheriff’s department said.

Baca Corrales and the victim also were acquaintances, and they were involved in a verbal altercation that led to the shooting, according to the release. There was no word about why the men were arguing.

The sheriff’s department said that Baca Corrales was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. No bond has been set for Baca Corrales, who remains behind bars, jail records show.

Following a bond hearing, Baca Corrales is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 27, 2026, Richland County judicial records show.
