Person dead for months when their signature appeared. It was forged, SC cops say
A signature was used to release an insurance check worth thousands of dollars, but the person whose name appeared had been dead for months when they allegedly endorsed the document, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
When it became clear that the signature could only be a forgery, an investigation led to the arrest of 65-year-old Greenwood resident Kimberly Denise Holloway, SLED said Monday in a news release.
On Dec. 3, Holloway was charged with forgery (less than $10,000) and obtaining property under false pretenses (value more than $2,000 but less than $10,000), according to the release.
SLED said it was asked to lead an investigation at the request of the South Carolina Department of Insurance.
On June 9, 2023, Holloway “fraudulently endorsed the name of the decedent ... on a policy surrender check in the amount of $2,028.80 issued by American General Life Insurance Company,” an arrest warrant said.
The decedent died more than 2 months their name was forged on the policy surrender check, according to the arrest warrant.
Holloway later admitted to forging the signature and cashing the check, the arrest warrant said. Information about what Holloway did with the money, and if she spent it all, was not available.
Holloway was booked into the Greenwood County Detention Center, SLED said in the release. Greenwood County court records show that Dec. 4, she posted $10,000 bond on the combined charges, and Holloway is not listed on the jail’s current inmate roster.
Holloway’s case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Department of Insurance, and she’s scheduled to return to court March 6, 2026.
If convicted, Holloway faces maximum punishments of 5 years in prison and fines for each of the felony charges, according to South Carolina law.
