Man’s body found near busy downtown intersection, Columbia police say

A grim discovery was made Thursday morning when multiple people saw a man’s dead body near a busy intersection in downtown Columbia, according to police.

Two people who were passing by the corner of Taylor Street and Assembly Street saw the lifeless body and called 911, the Columbia Police Department said on social media. That’s a block from Finlay Park, and next to the Oliver Gospel homeless shelter.

At about 7 a.m., officers responded and found the dead man, according to police.

No other injuries were reported. Foul play is not suspected in the man’s death, police said.

The Richland County Coroner’s office has neither publicly identified the man nor announced his cause of death.
