Man found shot multiple times in car near Columbia’s Harbison shopping district
A man who shot and killed someone who was trying to sell an iPhone has been arrested and charged with murder, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Twenty-three-year-old Rasheed Hawkins allegedly planned to meet up with a stranger who was trying to sell an iPhone and then attempted to rob the person, “which led to the victim being shot multiple times.”
Shihadeh Bir, a 54-year-old Irmo resident, was identified as the person who died in the shooting, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Monday.
Hawkins has been booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Sheriff’s deputies found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a vehicle Sunday afternoon in a neighborhood near Columbia’s Harbison shopping district.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said deputies were called around 1:10 p.m. on Feb. 15 to the 10 block of Cutlers Court for a reported shooting. When they arrived, they found the victim in a car with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Deputies began giving aid until EMS arrived and took the man to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The case remains under investigation.
Hawkins was arrested around 1 a.m. Monday by the Sheriff’s department’s Fugitive Task Force and Special Response Team, according to the sheriff’s department. Hawkins later confessed to the shooting.
