Police were looking for a shooter and found much more in a Columbia home
A man is in jail on multiple charges following a recent shooting in South Carolina, according to the Columbia Police Department.
On Tuesday, 36-year-old Curtis Harvin was arrested for his role in an April 1 shooting, as well as for what officers found in his possession during a search, police said in a news release.
On April 1, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 3100 block of Farrow Road, according to the release. ShotSpotter is a technology that uses acoustic monitors to detect a sound like gunfire. The system sends the gunfire’s location to law enforcement within 45 seconds.
No injuries were reported.
Officers and other crime analysts used surveillance footage to identify Harvin as the individual who fired the gun in the area near the Prisma Health Richland hospital complex, police said.
On April 21, officers located Harvin at a Howell Court home and took him into custody, according to the release. That’s about a third of a mile from where the shooting occurred.
Information about a motive for the gunfire was not available.
During the arrest and a search of the home, police said that they recovered a gun and a significant amount of illegal narcotics — including cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana and other controlled substances.
Harvin was charged with breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, trafficking cocaine, trafficking crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute a Schedule IV controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance within proximity of a school and two counts of possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I, II, or III controlled substance, according to the release.
Harvin was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, and his bond was set at $100,000, jail records show. Harvin remains behind bars, according to jail records.
