Woman in SC prison also will go to federal prison, official says. Here’s why

A Lexington County woman currently locked up in a South Carolina prison also will serve time in a federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Although she’s scheduled to be released from a South Carolina Department of Corrections prison on Aug. 17, Brittany Nicole Miles won’t be going free. That’s because the 37-year-old Lexington resident was recently sentenced to five years in federal prison, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Monday in a news release.

Miles will go to federal prison for possessing a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, according to the release.

Members of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the ATF used a confidential informant to buy methamphetamine and a firearm from Miles, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Miles agreed to sell approximately 2 ounces of meth and a gun to the informant, according to the release.

Miles directed the informant to meet her, and a co-defendant, at her public storage unit in West Columbia, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. At the meet. Miles provided the informant with 2 ounces of meth and a gun, according to the release.

U.S. District Judge Joseph Anderson sentenced Miles to 60 months in federal prison, to be followed by a 5-year term of court-ordered supervision, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. There is no parole in the federal system.

Assistant U.S. Attorney William Witherspoon prosecuted the case, according to the release. Attorney Lowell Bernstein was listed as Miles’ lawyer, court records show.
