One person killed when vehicle runs off road and crashes into tree, SC cops say
One person was killed over the weekend when a motorcycle crashed into a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 6:40 p.m. Saturday in McCormick County, said Master Trooper Joseph Rowell.
A 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was driving east on Woodlawn Road, according to Rowell. That’s not far from the Savannah River and the state line separating South Carolina and Georgia.
Near the intersection with Secondary 661 the Harley-Davidson crossed the center line then ran off the side of Woodlawn Road where it crashed into a tree, Rowell said.
The person driving the motorcycle was taken to an area hospital and died there, according to Rowell.
The McCormick County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the motorcycle rider.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet.
Information about what caused the Harley-Davidson to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through May 31, at least 340 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least two people have died in McCormick County crashes this year, and one person died in a wreck there in 2025, according to DPS data.
