Officer and another person shot overnight, South Carolina police say
A law enforcement officer and another person were shot Wednesday night, according to the West Columbia Police Department.
Both the West Columbia officer and the person called a “suspect” were taken to an area hospital, police said in a news release.
As of Thursday afternoon, the officer was released from the hospital, according to a news release by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
No other injuries were reported.
The incident began at about 9:30 p.m., when officers responded to an apartment building in the 500 block of North Brown Street, in response to a shots fired call, according to SLED. That’s in a part of Lexington County between U.S. 378/Sunset Boulevard and U.S. 1/Augusta Road, about 2 miles from the Gervais Street bridge and downtown Columbia.
When officers arrived on scene, they encountered a man exiting the apartment building with a firearm, according to a news release. Two officers exchanged gunfire with the man, leaving the man and one officer injured.
No arrests have been reported, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation, according to the release.
