Builders to demolish Myrtle Beach Hard Rock pyramid for new Dave & Buster’s

Hard Rock Café’s iconic 70-foot-tall pyramid that has towered over Broadway at the Beach for two decades has been marked for demolition to make room for the area’s first Dave & Buster’s.

Architects with LS3P Associates, a local architectural, planning and design firm, submitted plans to the city last week seeking approval for the pyramid’s destruction. Plans call for a “40,000-square-foot Dave & Buster’s” to be constructed in its place. The iconic pyramid has housed Hard Rock since Broadway at the Beach opened in 1995.

The plans will go before the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board for consideration Thursday afternoon.

Renderings submitted with the CAB application show a two-story brick restaurant surrounded by a renovated landscaping and parking lot where the pyramid now stands.

Dave & Buster’s, a popular full-service restaurant and arcade, operates in more than 80 locations across the United States. This will be South Carolina’s second location and the first Dave & Buster’s along the Grand Strand.

It is unclear when the restaurant will open.

Hard Rock Café Myrtle Beach continues to operate in the pyramid and will remain there until renovations for its new location in the former Broadway Louie’s spot at Broadway at the Beach is complete.

Construction continues on the new 15,043-square-foot Hard Rock Café, which is set to have seating for 528 guests, private event space, patio seating and a live music stage.

“The new Myrtle Beach cafe places us in a more strategic location at the heart of Broadway’s transformed entertainment and nightlife area,” Calum MacPherson, area vice president of cafe operations (North America) for Hard Rock International, said in February. “Additionally, the new Hard Rock Café Myrtle Beach will debut a fresh and invigorating design that reflects our brand’s contemporary atmosphere.”

Hard Rock officials say they plan to use the latest technology and closely follow a relocation model used on some of Hard Rock’s most successful properties in cities like New York and Boston to update the restaurant’s look.

The new location is set to open this summer.

Demolition of the pyramid, if approved, could begin later this year.
