These York, Lancaster and Chester county roads are up next for new pavement by SCDOT
The South Carolina Department of Transportation has a new plan to repair or reconstruct almost 1,000 miles of state roads. First, the transportation department wants to hear from the people who drive them.
The 2021-22 pavement improvement program would put an estimated $472 million into 997 miles of paving. Projects were ranked based on need, and are distributed throughout all 46 counties. A public comment period runs through June 16. Online comments will be taken at scdot.org.
Here are the proposed projects for York, Lancaster and Chester counties:
York County
York County has more than 20 miles of new pavement on the list. Work concentrates in the York, Lake Wylie and Rock Hill areas.
Major roads on the list include S.C. 5, U.S. 21 and U.S. 321. A mile of Anderson Road in Rock Hill will be repaired from Catawba Church Road to Townland Drive, a stretch that crosses I-77. Nearby work comes on Albright Road between the Flint Street Extension and the Main Street directional, and along East Main Street from Fire Tower to Belleview roads. To the south there’s a half-mile project on S.C. 5 from Anderson Road to Turkey Lane.
Three connected sections of Filbert Highway in York will be repaired, stretching from just south of the S.C. 161 intersection to Lawrence Road. Those projects combine for more than five miles, more than twice the distance of all the other major road projects combined.
York County has three farm-to-market secondary roads on the list. All three are in York. Almost four miles of Lincoln Road from Alexander Love Highway to Wood Road, the longest of any York County project at almost four miles, is connected to work on Old Limestone Road from Lincoln Road to Old Highway 321. There’s also work on Sutton Springs Road from Black Highway to Mission Road.
There are three neighborhood streets listed for York County. More than two miles of Riddle Mill Road in Lake Wylie, from S.C. 557 to the North Carolina line, is the longest at more than two miles. More than a mile of Paraham Road in Lake Wylie, from S.C. 557 to 55, also is listed. Connected to one of the major project roads in Rock Hill is a small stretch of S.C. 5 from Old Friendship Road to the Highway 5 southbound ramp.
Lancaster County
Lancaster County has nine listed projects. Most center in Lancaster.
Almost four miles of Monroe Highway, from Charlotte Highway to Old Pardue Road, and less than a mile of Cedar Creek Road near Cunningham Quarters Road are the two major road projects.
Farm-to-market work includes almost three miles of Shelley Mullis Road in Indian Land, from Charlotte Highway to the North Carolina line, and more than two miles of Cimmeron Road east of Lancaster, from South Potter Road to Berkley Way Drive.
Five neighborhood street projects combine for only about three miles. All of them are in downtown Lancaster. They include South Gregory and St. Paul streets, Blackmon Road, Kelly Drive and Brooklyn Avenue.
Chester County
Almost all of the 20 listed Chester County projects show up in Chester, most of them small jobs in the city.
Two major road projects are connected. J.A. Cochran Bypass from Lancaster Highway to Saluda Road joins up with Dawson Drive from Saluda to U.S. 321 Business. That work forms part of a ring around the city. It combines for more than three miles of new pavement.
The only farm-to-market project is a more-than-two-mile stretch of Old York Road from Standback to Aaron Burr roads.
The remaining neighborhood roads include Stringfellow, Sitton, Timberridge and Bentwood roads; Crestwood, Sylvia Hickin, Eadie and Forrestbrook drives; Carter, Cousar, Washington, Poplar, Unique and Maple streets; and Thomas E. Davis and Ebony Grove lanes.
