SCDOT plans to close the Gold Hill Road bridge over I-77 in the Fort Mill, Tega Cay area

The bridge at the interchange for I-77 and Gold Hill road will be closed this weekend for the latest scheduled improvements.

The interchange between Fort Mill and Tega Cay is near the end of a years-long upgrade to create a diverging diamond traffic pattern. Traffic on Gold Hill now crosses from the right to the left side of the roadway in an attempt to create fewer left turns, getting on or driving by the interstate.

SCDOT planned to close the bridge earlier this year to make final changes but that work was delayed due to snow. The Gold Hill interchange is among the busiest on the South Carolina side of I-77, just south of the North Carolina line and Charlotte.

The bridge over the interstate will close on Friday night just before midnight. It will reopen at 5 a.m. March 7. The interstate and ramps to access it will remain open.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation suggests use of a detour route along U.S. 21 Bypass and S.C. 160 West. This weekend workers will install pavement markings, new lights and new asphalt to the configuration that switched over as a diamond this past fall.
