Traffic was heavy during the day Friday along Carowinds Boulevard and Interstate 77 at Exit 90, at the NC-SC border because the amusement park is open, officials said.

The park opened in March for the 2022 season.

Heavy traffic is expected to continue through the Easter weekend with Spring Break winding up for area schools.

Much of the heavy traffic was Carowinds amusement park traffic, said Cpl. Johnathan Gilbert of the York County Sheriff’s Office and Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The highway patrol had not reported any collisions on either I-77 or Carowinds Boulevard as of 12:30 p.m. Friday, according to Miller and the highway patrol Web site.

The park entrance is on the South Carolina side of the park just west of I-77. The park, which sits on both sides of the state line, was closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and re-opened in 2021.
