Travel between several busy Rock Hill roads just got easier. See what’s open now
A major Rock Hill road connection is ready for traffic. Thursday was opening day for the new Galleria Boulevard extension.
The new road connects Dave Lyle Boulevard to Red River Road. The close to $7 million project was part of a 2017 Pennies for Progress campaign approved by York County voters to improve roads.
The opening is one of several large ones coming to completion, including the S.C. 274 and Pole Branch Road project in Lake Wylie, the just finished I-77 and Gold Hill Road interchange and others.
Galleria Boulevard hit a dead end behind the Galleria Mall near an apartment complex prior to the upgrade. Now four lanes connect to Red River Road at the intersection that joins Waterford Park Road. The new road should ease congestion on Dave Lyle and create access to I-77.
“We want connectivity,” Pennies director Patrick Hamilton said in a county release announcing the opening. “We want to find alternate routes to get where we’re going without having to get on the main thoroughfares.”
Sidewalks, street lights and turn lanes already are in place to allow for future growth in the area. The extension of Galleria Boulevard is part of a larger Red River Road widening. That more than $40 million project from Galleria Boulevard to Dave Lyle should be complete in 2024.
