UPDATE: York County schools to go online Monday as winter storm threat lingers

Schools across the Rock Hill region are moving to e-learning on Monday because of the possibility of frozen roads.

“That means everyone stays home and all buildings are closed to students and staff,” the Rock Hill School District posted to its Facebook page at 8 p.m. Saturday. “Our families and staff will receive additional information directly. Stay safe everyone.”

The Fort Mill School District emailed parents about the same time to say school facilities there will be closed Monday.

“We will continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and will announce any further changes to the school schedule as soon as they are determined,” the district wrote. “We hope everyone stays safe and warm while our community experiences this weather system.”

The Clover School District made the same call, citing communications with York County Emergency Management.

“The storm is bringing crippling amounts of ice and extremely cold temperatures to York County,” the Clover district posted on its homepage. “The potential of ice accumulation is making road conditions dangerous for travel and has left many homes and schools without electricity.

York School District facilities are closed Monday, too, as the district moves to an asynchronous e-learning day.

“An asynchronous e-learning day means that students will not log on for live instruction from their teachers,” the district posted on Facebook. “Instead, students will complete assignments posted to Canvas (the district’s online learning management system) or provided in paper packets for our youngest learners.”

The decisions Saturday night come after the districts canceled weekend events on Thursday and Friday. The Rock Hill district postponed a district-wide employee recruitment fair it had planned for Saturday, and rescheduled it for Jan. 31. That event will happen at South Pointe High School.

The York School District also postponed an employee career fair from Saturday to Feb. 7 at York Comprehensive High School. A fish fry fundraiser for the high school band was pushed back a week, too.

The Lancaster County School District canceled after-school events on Friday, along with all weekend activities. Teachers were instructed to prepare students for possible e-learning on Monday, Interim Superintendent Norris Williams said in a weather update video.

“Although it’s too early to determine what our situation will be in reference to school for next week, it is not too early for us to plan,” he said.

The Rock Hill region is expected to get a heavy dose of wintry mix this weekend.

York, Lancaster and Chester counties are under a winter storm watch. People in the area should avoid travel this weekend if possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Winthrop, Clinton, York Tech cancel in-person school Monday

Winthrop University will go to online learning Monday, the school announced Friday morning. The school doesn’t expect changes in dining services, at the West Center or to the DiGiorgio Campus Center unless the school loses power. If the weather causes staffing issues, dining services may close Markley’s, but the Eagle Eatery will remain open.

Facilities support staff and Winthrop police officers will be on campus Monday.

Clinton College students will have online classes Monday, with the Rock Hill campus closed for all in-person activities.

York Technical College also will have remote learning Monday, with all activities and events canceled at both the Rock Hill and Chester campuses.
