Is Rock Hill headed for history? Snow that just broke one record keeps piling up
Rock Hill’s longest period without snow record is finished, with Saturday’s precipitation starting an expected nearly 10 inches through Sunday morning across York, Lancaster and Chester counties.
Now, it’s just a matter of where this weekend will rank among the region’s biggest snow storms ever.
Until Saturday, it had been 1,470 days — more than four years — since any weather data station recorded an inch or more of snow for the National Weather Service. That’s the longest such drought on record, dating back to 1899. The previous record was 1,410 days from February 1948 to December 1951.
There’s been icy weather, wintry mixes and trace amounts of snow since a January 2022 storm brought more nearly two inches of snow in Chester, and nearly that much across York and Lancaster counties. And just last weekend, and ice storm shut down schools and public offices.
But the fluffy, ankle-deep flakes on Saturday hadn’t come in several years.
By Saturday morning, stations in Tega Cay and Clover were reporting 2 inches of snow on the ground. Snow has been coming down sideways ever since.
On Saturday afternoon, the weather service updated its forecast to show nearly 10 inches of snow expected in Rock Hill for the weekend.
So, where will Saturday rank among the biggest snow storms on record in the Rock Hill region? Here’s a look:
