UPDATE: Heat advisory issued for Lowcountry until Saturday evening

The NWS Charleston SC issued an updated heat advisory at 2:16 a.m. on Saturday valid between noon and 8 p.m. The advisory is for Inland Colleton, Inland Berkeley, Inland Jasper, Coastal Colleton, Coastal Jasper and Tidal Berkeley as well as Allendale, Hampton, Dorchester, Beaufort and Charleston counties.

The NWS informs, "Heat index values up to 106 degrees to 110 expected."

"Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," adds the NWS.

This advisory is in effect until 8 p.m.

• Consume plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
• Seek shelter: Stay indoors in an air-conditioned room to keep cool.
• Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
• Ensure child and pet safety: Take every precaution to never leave young children and pets alone in vehicles, especially in extreme heat when car interiors can quickly become hazardous.
• Exercise caution outdoors: If you work or spend time outside, take additional safety measures.
• Find the right time: Consider rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening if possible.
• Recognize early indicators: Learn to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to stay comfortable.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
