12,000-plus without power, trees down as storm rips through York, Chester, Lancaster

More than 12,000 homes in York, Chester, and Lancaster counties lost power Friday afternoon as a storm ripped through the area, officials said.

Several area roads were blocked as trees fell amid the high winds and rain around 4 p.m., officials said.

Duke Energy reported more than 6,000 outages in the three counties around 5 p.m., according to the utility’s outage map.

York Electric Cooperative had about 3,000 customers without power, its map showed.

The City of Rock Hill had more than 3,100 customers out of service, according to its outage map and city figures.

Several roads were blocked after trees fell across highways in Rock Hill and northern York County toward Lake Wylie, according to York County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management officials. Mount Gallant Road had two areas where it was blocked by trees, deputies said.

A tornado warning was issued for York County before the storm hit by the National Weather Service but as of 5 p.m. no tornadoes had been reported, said Chuck Haynes, director of emergency management.
