When will the rain end? And, how much have we had in the Rock Hill region?

Be patient. Drier days are ahead.

That’s the promise from meteorologists, who say a persistent wet and stormy pattern across the Rock Hill area and the rest of the Southeast will be replaced by drier weather in June.

And the change will come by late this weekend, they say.

Meanwhile, more showers and drenching thunderstorms are expected through Saturday evening. Some of the storms could be heavy, and any rainfall could trigger brief flooding, given the area’s soggy conditions.

“A few of these storms could become strong to severe, with the main threats being damaging winds and large hail,” says National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Krentz.

Rain fell again Friday across the Rock Hill area, which means precipitation has been recorded at the York County airport on 10 of the past 12 days. During that time, nearly 7 inches of rain has fallen -- about three times the normal amount for that period.

The rain flooded roads near Dave Lyle Blvd and Galleria Blvd in Rock Hill, reports the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Nearly 8 inches has been recorded at an automated gauge in Tega Cay, while another gauge at Camp Thunderbird along Lake Wylie has measured more than 7 inches.

A pattern-changing cold front is expected to sweep across the area Saturday. The frontal passage will bring more showers and thunderstorms, forecasters say.

But with the front moving east of the region Saturday night, cooler and drier air will move in.

“This will bring deeply dry air and cooler air mixing into the forecast area,” Krentz says. “So after high temperatures right around normal Saturday, highs will drop about 5 degrees on Sunday.”

That means sunshine and afternoon temperatures in the upper 70s for the final day of the weekend.

June will begin with a continued drier and cooler air mass, as Monday’s highs are expected to be in the mid and upper 70s under full sunshine. Krentz says temperatures gradually will climb next week, reaching the lower 80s Wednesday and the upper 80s by Thursday.

No rain is expected until next weekend, according to forecasters.
