Rock Hill temperatures seem cooler than you remember? They are for now.
Area residents awoke Monday to the chilliest September temperatures in five years, and there’s more to come over the next few days.
A Canadian high pressure system built into the Carolinas over the weekend, dropping the Monday morning low to 49 degrees at Rock Hill’s airport.
The last time temperatures fell into the 40s in September was in 2015.
A year ago this week, a heat wave developed across the Rock Hill area and the rest of the Carolinas, sending temperatures near 100 degrees into the beginning of October.
It looks a lot different this year.
Meteorologists say cooler weather is likely much of this week, with afternoon highs about 5-10 degrees below average. Temperatures could fall into the upper 40s again Tuesday morning -- perfect for the first day of autumn.
The National Weather Service’s Rodney Hinson says the high pressure system will weaken by Wednesday.
“That will allow temperatures to gradually warm to near normal by the end of the week,” Hinson said.
The dry weather also will come to an end later in the week. Hinson said a flow of air from the Gulf of Mexico will stream into the area, bringing a chance of showers Friday through Sunday.
The advance outlook from the National Weather Service calls for warmer-than-average temperatures early next week, followed by a cooling trend for the final days of September and the start of October.
