Here’s the weather forecast starting with tonight’s football games and over the weekend
Forecasters have a message for anyone whose weekend plans include outdoor activities: Take an umbrella.
The Carolinas are likely to see plenty of rain this weekend, says National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Krentz. And while it might not be raining all the time, forecasters expect frequent showers, and some of them could bring downpours.
“A broad area of low pressure over Louisiana will channel deep moisture and possibly heavy rainfall into the area into the weekend,” Krentz said this week.
Forecasters say the counter-clockwise atmospheric flow around the low pressure system will bring a steady stream of moisture into the Carolinas, from late Friday night into Monday. They say that will result in waves of showers and a few thunderstorms, especially Saturday and Sunday.
Generally good conditions are forecast through Friday. Krentz says that while moisture will increase in the atmosphere gradually Friday, showers will hold off until after late Friday night.
High pressure over New England will send a cooler northeast flow into the Carolinas. So after highs climbed near or above 90 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, afternoon highs are only expected to be in the low 80s the next two days.
Conditions are expected to be good for Friday night’s high school football.
It’s a different story after that, say forecasters.
If you’re planning to attend outdoor festivals or sporting events – such as the Carolina Panthers’ home opener Sunday, or Charlotte FC’s home match Saturday – there could be rain.
Krentz says the steady stream of showers could create flooding in the mountains, although computer guidance is having a tough time pinning down exactly where the heaviest rain will fall.
He says current expectations are that 1 to 1.5 inches of rain will fall Saturday in the Piedmont, with additional amounts Sunday.
All that is subject to change, forecasters say, depending on exactly how the rainfall situation sets up.
Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to continue Sunday and even into Monday, before drier weather returns next week.
