Letters to the editor for Feb. 24

Evidence for warming slim

Regarding the Saturday column by John Crisp, “Creative ways to deny climate change”: I don’t deny there is climate change.

In my high school history classes we learned of cities and civilizations that moved or vanished due to climate change. The key factor is rainfall and water supply.

In February 2014, climate experts were saying California is due for a mega-drought. From studying tree rings, sediment and other evidence researchers report many 10- to 20-year droughts with several lasting over 100 years in the past 1,000 years.

An article, “Searching for Doggerland,” in the December 2012 issue of National Geographic, stated that what is now the English Channel and part of the North Sea were once hunting and farming land. With the warming temperatures, the land was flooded.

The article says the climate was “perhaps a couple of degrees warmer than today.”

Ice ages: If you believe in biblical creation, there was probably an ice age after the flood.

And for evolutionists, over millions of years, there have been seven or more ice ages. In my limited travels, I have not seen the great sheets of ice and glaciers covering large areas of the continent.

What happened to them? My guess is it got warmer and they melted. This melting occurred before or shortly after mankind’s arrival.

Now some scientists, but not all scientists, say man is the cause of global warming. I read that the volcano eruption in 2007 in Iceland or Greenland added more carbon to the atmosphere in three days than the reduction in carbon that man had been able to achieve.

Maybe it is time to cut spending and grants to prove global warming is factual and start to consider cost-effective ways of reducing pollution without destroying our economy. Ayman al-Zawahiri, a leader of al-Qaida, called on Muslims to “bleed America economically.”

“The weak point of America is its economy,” he said.
