Letters to the editor for Dec. 22
Tragedy inspired recent march
The day after the tragedy in San Bernardino, Calif., I awoke wondering if there would be any mass shootings that day. And then it occurred to me how wrong and how horrifying it was that anyone would have to wake up wondering something like that. And, although my husband and I had not exactly been inactive in the movement for sensible gun control, somehow signing online petitions and changing our Facebook status no longer seemed adequate.
Turning to the Moms Demand Action site, I found that, in memory of the Sandy Hook shooting, walks were being planned in communities across the country.
If you do not think we need to institute sensible gun control, please rethink your position. You cannot buy unlimited Sudafed or unlimited amounts of nitrogen-based fertilizer without facing regulations. You put up with these inconveniences because, although the vast majority of people who wish to purchase those things will use them for innocent purposes, some people might use them for harm. And yet the shooters in San Bernardino were able to purchase 6,000 rounds of ammo without attracting any attention.
I’m sure that the vast majority of people purchasing 6,000 rounds of ammo are just avid target practice enthusiasts. But if we had some alert point short of 6,000 rounds that caused questions to be asked, perhaps lives could have been saved.
Or perhaps there are other regulations on which we could agree.
But we must do something.
To our neighbors who agree with us, we want you to know that you are not alone. The gun culture may make you feel alone, but you are not.
