Trump kidding on plea to Russians

Regarding The Miami Herald’s guest editorial on Friday’s opinion page, “Trump plays kissy-face with Putin”: Donald Trump made a sarcastic and very funny comment asking Russia to find Hillary Clinton’s missing emails. I watched live, and it was not serious.

Donald Trump didn’t take it seriously, as he has repeatedly said, nor did Americans take it seriously. But The Miami Herald (and The Rock Hill Herald) tries to turn one funny, sarcastic remark into a full-fledged critique on Trump’s competence. Pleeeezzzze!

And if Hillary’s deleted emails were about nothing more than yoga lessons and wedding plans, why is that a national security issue?

Stay attuned to congressional race

Though the spectacle of the party conventions captured a lot of attention locally and nationwide, the voters of South Carolina will not have much impact on the presidential election. We will inevitably see the TV ads intended for the voters in North Carolina, but the foregone conclusion in South Carolina means that the presidential candidates are unlikely to be back before the 2020 primaries make us relevant and useful to them once again.

Despite this, voters have a responsibility to stay engaged. We have to choose the person who will represent our district in Congress. Our representative is the advocate in the federal bureaucracy for our veterans, our farmers, our needy, our schools and our businesses.

Our district is a big one, and representing it requires someone energetic, curious and humble. My neighbor Fran Person is all of these things. His willingness to seek answers, work hard and reach out to people of all political stripes is a perfect match for the job he seeks. I’m proud to know Fran and proud that my son has someone as upstanding as him to look up to.

Our current congressman is a complete unknown to most of us. His achievements in Congress are just as much of a blank. He may well be a nice guy, but our district deserves better.
