Vetoing the school-choice bill

In vetoing Education Superintendent Jim Rex's public school choice bill last month, Gov. Mark Sanford passed up an opportunity to inculcate South Carolina public educators with the desire to achieve peak performance. But Sanford's veto, which the House subsequently sustained, has not stopped Rex from encouraging teachers, administrators and school boards to reinvent their jobs to benefit South Carolina youngsters. ...

The failure of the bill will come as a relief to educators disinclined to seek better ways to do their jobs. But to hear Rex tell it, many school board members, teachers, administrators and parents across South Carolina welcome his leadership in creating better learning opportunities for South Carolina children. ...

Like Sanford, Rex is a statewide constitutional officer. He, too, can use his bully pulpit to foment change. He is willing to fill the void left by Sanford's disengagement from public school reform....
