A cornhole tournament will put Rock Hill in national ESPN spotlight — again
Cornhole will put Rock Hill in the national spotlight again.
Starting on Wednesday, Aug. 5, ESPN will be airing live coverage of the American Cornhole League World Championships from the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center, according to the league’s website.
The tournament will broadcast select games on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, the pro doubles semifinals and the co-ed final will air on ESPN.
ESPN2 will show the pro singles semifinals and the women’s doubles final at noon Sunday.
The city of Rock Hill and the ACL have worked together before. In May, Rock Hill’s multimillion-dollar center hosted the ACL’s Pro Invitational Qualifier, which was also shown on ESPN. That was one of the nation’s first live sporting events after the novel coronavirus pandemic caused the cancellation of several national spectacles, including the NCAA Tournament.
The cornhole event will have a “guaranteed minimum payout of $150,000,” according to its website, with a grand prize of $40,000 to the pro doubles winner and $40,000 to the pro singles champion. The player field can have a maximum of 1,024 players.
On-site registration may be available 30 minutes prior to the start of each event, if space is available, according to the website.
After temporarily closing in mid-March because of COVID-19, the sports center reopened last month hosting four basketball tournaments, including one this past weekend that drew nearly 130 teams to Rock Hill.
