The Lewisville Lions are at the midpoint of their Region 3-1A season, and they are currently at the top of the league standings.

The Lions are 7-3 overall, but more importantly they played the first half of the region campaign and posted a 4-0 record. They won all four of their region matches without losing a set.

Head coach Josh Renaud and assistant coach Ryane Railey are pleased with the way the team has worked and improved.

Renaud, who is in his ninth season at the head of the Lions’ program, cites several reasons for the success.

“We were very dedicated in the offseason to get better, and that has carried over into the regular season,” he said. “We also have more players who participate year round, and that experience has also helped us.”

Senior outside hitter Priscilla Andrews and junior outside hitter Allie Colvin are the team captains.

“Those two have been very good leaders by example thus far,” the coach said. “We have eight seniors on this year’s team, and they have all stepped up this year as well. I could not ask for it to be any better.”

The work ethic exhibited also has been exceptional, he said.

“It has exceeded my expectations,” Renaud said. “The players know what they need to work on to get better, and they take the initiative to tell the coaching staff what they need to be pushed on to improve.”

The Lewisville offense has been spearheaded by Colvin, Andrews, and junior middle hitter Saleena Rollins. Colvin leads with 86 kills, while Andrews has 83 kills, and Rollins has tallied 66 kills. Those three are also the leaders in aces. Rollins has 35, while Colvin has scored 29, and Andrews has 28.

The Lions have two setters in junior Kelly McKinney and Colvin. Both have played well. McKinney has 117 assists, and Colvin has dished out 86 assists.

Defensively, the Lions go all out on every volley.

“They dive all over the floor when they need to keep a volley going,” Renaud said. “It is very exciting to watch every player on this team play defense.”

Rollins has 83 digs and nine blocks, while senior Alyssa Rollings adds 76 digs. Andrews has recorded 68 digs and nine blocks, and sophomore Victoria Hayes leads the team in blocks with 16.

The Lions have a rotation of at least nine players every match, and they use all 12 players on the roster in most matches.

Emerson Dickman, Lauren Owens, Kristen Lee, Sha’Laiyah Robinson, and Kylie Walters, all of whom are seniors, all have seen considerable playing time. Sophomore Sydney Rollins also has seen action.

Renaud said he knows the importance of being at the top of the region at the halfway point.

“We have played all of the teams in the region once, and we have let them know what we are capable of doing,” Renaud said. “The good start in the region has given our players a lot of confidence as we move forward.”

The veteran coach also knows what his team has to do to stay up there.

“We need to stay focused both physically and mentally,” he said. “We cannot let down. The other teams will be ready for us when we play them again.”

He also knows that his team has not reached its potential.

“This is a very competitive group of players,” he said. “They want to get better individually and as a team. If we keep working hard and playing together we can get better and continue our success.”
