Irmo, Hough among five new teams in Carolinas Top 25 high school football poll

Five new teams join the rankings of the top high school football teams in North and South Carolina.

Irmo (SC) and Cornelius Hough (NC) High are in the Carolinas Top 25 poll this week with Clinton (NC), Daniel (SC) and Charleston’s James Island (SC).

The top 25 is produced by McClatchy Newspapers staff in both states along with longtime North Carolina high school football expert Chris Hughes, a co-host on The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer of Raleigh’s weekly high school sports streaming show, “Talking Preps.”

The top six spots remained the same, while Rock Hill Northwestern (SC) and Simpsonvile Hillcrest (SC) each jumped up four spots. Northwestern is No. 11 this week, after a blowout win against Gaffney, and Hillcrest is No. 12. Gaffney fell from No. 7 to 25.

Elsewhere, Duncan Byrnes (SC) moved up five spots to No. 13 and Charlotte’s Chambers High jumped eight spots to No. 14.

Chambers visits No. 20 Hough in the N.C. game of the week Friday.
