Three big days of cycling left at the Giordana Velodrome
Some of the country’s best men and women track cyclists will compete for national championship titles through Sunday when Rock Hill hosts the USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships at the Giordana Velodrome.
This year’s event, which began Tuesday, will include some of the most exciting track cycling disciplines: individual and team pursuits, scratch races, points races, match sprints (individual and team), and Madison.
Track cyclists, cycling enthusiasts, and spectators from all across the country are expected to attend. Riders competing in the Masters National Championships must be 35 years of age and older; some riders over age 70 are expected to compete. Over 400 cyclists are expected, including reigning National Champions, prior World Champions and many top nationally ranked riders.
Rock Hill’s Steve Lehman won the 65-69-year-old pursuit race on Tuesday, while Olga Weeks, also from Rock Hill, placed fifth in the 45-49 match sprints on the same day.
Rider warm-ups begin at 5 p.m. and races begin at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The action continues until all races are complete. Scratch races, points races and match sprints will be featured through Saturday with different age categories competing each evening. Racing on Sunday begins at 10 a.m. featuring team pursuits, team sprints and Madison races. National Championship awards will be presented in various events at the conclusion of racing each evening and on Sunday morning.
Races are open to the public, and admission for spectators is free. The fast, intense racing action is entertaining for all ages. Food and drinks will be available for sale. Parking is free; shuttle buses will be available for remote parking.
