Rock Hill’s Kevin and Jodee Tindal defended their title last weekend, winning the 18th annual Carolinas Parent-Child Championship golf tournament in Pinehurst, N.C., by a single stroke.

The pair defended their title by mixing seven birdies with four bogeys for a 3-under 69. The championship format is 18 holes of modified alternate shot. Playing in two-person teams, both team members hit from the tee, select one ball to be played, then play alternate shot until the ball is holed.

“Jodee makes it real easy,” said Kevin. “She hits it right down the middle. We played 17 of Jodee’s tee balls today.”

“And he made all the putts,” added Jodee, who won a 3A state championship in 2014 at South Pointe.

The Tindals bested three-time Parent-Child champions Gary and Lauren Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C., and one of last year’s runners-up, Kevin and Hayley Hammond of Mooresville, N.C. An eagle on the final hole by the Hammond duo was not enough to force a playoff with the Tindals.

“It’s something we look forward to every year,” said Kevin Tindal. “It’s a great event event and we’ve been doing it since both Jodee and her sister Jaelyn were little.”

59th annual Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship July 28-30 in Rock Hill

Rock Hill Country Club is hosting the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship golf tournament July 28 through 30, and several locals are among the favorites to win.

Rock Hill’s Jodee Tindal, a rising junior at South Pointe, is currently ranked third in South Carolina and has the home course advantage. Lancaster’s Emily Cox has recent success boosting her confidence after the rising junior recently won the South Carolina Junior Golf Association’s Blade Junior Golf Classic. Cox is ranked 10th in the state.

Jessica Spicer (Bahama, N.C.) is the reigning champ after dominating last year’s event with an eight-stroke victory. Madison Moosa (Charlotte) and Grace Yatawara (Salisbury, N.C.) are the other North Carolinians that could take the title.

A number of past Junior Girls’ Championship winners have gone on to successful college careers. This year’s event marks the first time it’s being hosted by Rock Hill Country Club.
