High school football roundup: Clover wallops turnover-prone Fort Mill
Aaron Shealey passed for a touchdown and ran for another Monday night, leading host Clover to a lopsided 33-3 victory over Fort Mill in a Region 3 5A game.
The host Blue Eagles (4-2, 1-1) build a 26-0 halftime lead against the Yellow Jackets (1-4, 0-2), who hurt themselves with four turnovers.
Shealey opened the scoring with a 4-yard run, and Landon Stone dashed 20 yards for Clover’s second score of the opening period. Stone had run 34 yards on the play prior to his touchdown. Between their two touchdowns, Haven Maddox kicked a 34-yard field goal.
Maddox connected on a 45-yarder midway through the second quarter, giving Clover a 19-0 lead. the Blue Eagles made it 26-0 shortly before the half on a 32-yard pass from Shealey to Jake Frontz.
Grady Stone’s 2-yard run midway in the third quarter extended the Clover lead to 33-0. Fort Mill averted a shutout late in the period when Noah Hardy kicked a 30-yard field goal.
SATURDAY
Rock Hill 35, Indian Land 28: Kason Canupp fired an 18-yard touchdown pass to E.J. Ratley with 49 seconds remaining, lifting host Rock Hill to a 35-28 Region 3 5A victory over Indian Land.
Canupp’s scoring pass capped a frantic fourth quarter, in which three touchdowns were scored.
Indian Land (3-2, 0-1) had taken a 28-21 lead when Lavoris Lucas ran 3 yards for a touchdown — one play after Lucas returning a kickoff 77 yards,
Rock Hill (3-3, 2-0) tied the game minutes later on a Canupp pass, and Canupp then added the winning score to Ratley.
Indian Land had bolted to a 14-0 lead on two first-quarter touchdowns, one of them by rushing leader Jamol Horton.
The Warriors threatened in the closing seconds, but Rock Hill sealed the victory with an interception.
Richland Northeast 19, Lancaster 6: Will Wilson ran for two touchdowns and passed to Cameron Buckley for another, as the Cavaliers (6-0, 2-0 Region 3 4A) remained undefeated. Lancaster (2-2, 0-1) took the lead midway in the first quarter on a rushing touchdown. Wilson then ran 5 yards for a tying score.
Lancaster missed a field goal early in the second quarter, and it was 6-6 at the half. Wilson put the Cavs ahead to stay with a 4-yard scoring pass to Buckley midway in the third period.
Buford 41, North Central 36: The host Yellowjackets (2-4, 1-0 S.C. Region 5 2A) won their region opener on an 87-yard pass from Noah Crump to Cole Carnes with 1:20 left in the game. Buford then sealed the victory by stopping North Central (2-3, 0-1) on downs.
North Central had rallied from a 28-7 deficit to take a 36-28 lead in the fourth quarter. Mason Randolph’s fourth rushing touchdown of the game brought Buford to within 36-35, and the Yellowjackets then forced a punt and got the winning score.
Fairfield Central 36, Andrew Jackson 7: The visiting Griffins (5-1) rolled, as Tydarion Greer ran for four touchdowns. That brought Greer’s total to 12 rushing touchdowns on the season. Andrew Jackson (0-5) had taken a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but Fairfield Central rallied for a 15-7 halftime lead.
A.C. Flora 28, York 21: A.C. Flora (4-2, 1-1 Region 3 4A) held off a comeback effort by the Cougars (2-4, 1-1), who had trailed 21-7 early in the fourth quarter.
Fort Mill at Clover: This Region 3 5A game was postponed until 6:30 p.m. Monday. A power outage at Clover High, caused by Hurricane Helene, prevented the teams from playing Saturday.
