High school football roundup: Catawba Ridge, Clover, South Pointe among Friday’s winners
Four different players scored touchdowns Friday night as Catawba Ridge cruised past neighborhood rival Nation Ford 34-7 in a Region 3 5A football game.
The Copperheads (6-2, 3-1) also got a pair of field goals from Camden Gifford.
Catawba Ridge led 3-0 in the second quarter when Dev Crawford scored on a 3-yard run. Nation Ford got within 10-7 two minutes later on a touchdown reception by Josh Ameo.
The Copperheads broke it open in the third quarter, scoring on a 4-yard pass from C.J. Couch to tight end Brady Ambrose, an 11-yard run by Brayden Wasik, and a 4-yard run by senior lineman Lewis Price.
Clover 21, Indian Land 7: Brothers Grady and Landon Stone each ran for touchdowns, and Aaron Shealey threw for another score, as the Blue Eagles (5-3, 2-2) scored a key Region 3 5A victory. Grady Stone’s 3-yard touchdown run put Clover up 7-0 midway in the first quarter, and Shealey connected with Cam James on a 27-yard touchdown just three minutes later.
Indian Land (4-4, 1-3) cut the deficit to 14-7 early in the fourth quarter, on a 4-yard run by Jamol Horton. But Landon Stone’s 29-yard run with 3:59 remaining gave Clover some breathing room.
South Pointe 42, Lancaster 13: The host Stallions (6-2, 4-0) remained alone atop Region 3 4A, scoring three times in the third quarter. South Pointe led 13-0 after the first quarter, on a 38-yard pass from Cam McMillon to Daylin Duncan and on a 7-yard run by Mason Pickett-Hicks.
A scoreless second quarter was followed by a wild third period, in which the teams totaled five touchdowns. South Pointe went up 21-0 on a 13-yard pass from McMillon to Jordan Collins, but Lancaster scored on a 54-yard pass from R.J. Brown to Avery Alexander.
The Stallions made it 28-6 on a 61-yard run by Pickett-Hicks, but Lancaster followed with a 61-yard touchdown run from Brown. South Pointe then scored with 16 seconds left in the quarter on a 57-yard pass from McMillon to Collins. Pickett-Hicks finished the scoring with a 90-yard gallop in the fourth quarter.
Camden 21, York 13: Camden (5-3, 2-2 Region 3 4A) held off a late rally by York (2-6, 1-3) for the victory. Camden led 21-7 with six minutes remaining, but York scored on a 17-yard touchdown reception by Ajdrin Mobley. The conversion failed, and the Cougars trailed 21-13.
York then forced Camden to punt and took over at their own 45. The Cougars moved to the Camden 26 in the closing seconds but were unable to score.
Chester 34, Columbia 0: The host Cyclones (3-5, 2-1) scored a lopsided Region 3 2A victory, as Hudhaifah Taylor ran for three touchdowns. Chester held Columbia (4-4, 0-2) to negative total yardage.
Chesterfield 35, Buford 21: The Yellow Jackets (3-6, 1-2 Region 4 2A) battled back from a 21-0 second-quarter deficit and got within six points in the fourth quarter, but the Rams (1-2, 6-2) pulled away.
Noah Crump fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to Hawkins Wilson late in the first half, cutting Chesterfield’s lead to 21-7. The Rams pulled ahead 27-7, but Buford narrowed the gap on a 2-yard run by Trevan Roberts in the third quarter and a 38-yard pass from Crump to Wilson eaqrly in the fourth quarter.
Chesterfield’s T.J. McBride rushed for more than 180 yards.
Lewisville 52, McBee 7: Jordan Strong ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, as Lewisville (7-1, 3-0) rolled to a Region 3 1A victory. Lewisville built a 43-7 halftime lead over McBee (3-4, 1-2), thanks to 170 rushing yards and nearly 300 yards’ total offense. Lewisville scored a pair of safeties in the victory.
Pageland Central 20, Andrew Jackson 0: The host Eagles scored on three long plays and ran their Region 4 2A record to 2-1 (6-2 overall). Pageland Central scored on a 51-yard pass in the first quarter, a 32-yard run in the second quarter, and a 60-yard pass in the third period. Andrew Jackson (1-7, 1-2) drove to the Eagles’ 5 in the second quarter, but a fourth-down pass was intercepted in the end zone.
