High school football rewind: NC scores, how The Sweet 16 fared, next week’s schedule
AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom.
- No. 1 Hough edged Highland Springs (VA) 17-14 to remain unbeaten at 3-0.
- Independence escaped with a 35-34 win behind Semaj Robinson’s final-play sack.
- NCHSAA reported 102 athlete ejections since Aug. 11, raising sportsmanship concerns.
A few highlights:
- Hough, the No. 1 ranked team in The Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 and the N.C. 8A poll, went to Virginia and beat state power Highland Springs 17-14. The Huskies had three touchdowns called back and coach Shawn Baker said on The Talking Preps postgame show that his team was penalized more than 20 times compared to just one for the home team. “I’m never going back there again,” Baker said.
- East Rutherford and Shelby did something on Friday that’s pretty difficult. East Rutherford beat College Prep Leadership 84-8, and Shelby beat Highland Tech 90-0. N.C. changed a rule this year to start a running clock when a team is leading by 35 points. Shelby led 40-0 after the first quarter and 70-0 at halftime. This was a conference game.
- Myers Park, 4-6 last season, is 3-0 now. The Mustangs beat Providence 45-7, a week after a huge upset at Weddington. For the season, Myers Park has outscored opponents 110-31 and plays at Mallard Creek next week in a monster matchup.
- Charlotte Country Day is off to a 3-0 start after beating Greensboro’s Ben Smith 31-15 on Friday. Country Day has won four games in each of the past three seasons and hasn’t had a winning season since 2019.
Independence holds off Christian in wild game
Independence High can thank senior defensive lineman Semaj Robinson for Friday’s thrilling 35-34 win over Charlotte Christian.
Robinson sacked Christian QB Elliott Newcombe on the final play of the game, an attempted 2-point conversion that could’ve won the game for the Knights.
Robinson’s heroics — which included a 2-point conversion run — ended a wild game where the Patriots overcame three turnovers inside the 30, and one that landed in the Christian end zone.
Coming off a disappointing 35-0 loss to Sweet 16 No. 1 Hough last week, Independence needed a win to avoid a 1-2 start. And early on, the Patriots were clicking, taking a 13-0 lead, despite missing star running back Jayden Jones (hamstring), the preseason Charlotte Observer Mecklenburg County public school offensive player of the year.
Another preseason All-Observer pick, Nebraska commit Jamal Rule from Christian, got going, big time, with back-to-back scoring runs of 65- and 76-yards.
By the time he was done, the Knights led 14-13.
The teams then traded scores, although Independence fumbled away several attempts to lead by more than one score. But finally, QB Jared Street hit Patriots’ senior Prince Young with a high ball that Young caught between two Charlotte Christian defenders, leaping high and keeping his feet.
That gave Independence a 35-28 lead with 6 minutes, 44 seconds to play.
Later, after a stop, Street and the Patriots had the ball again, but a Patriots running back was stripped after a long run to the Knights 30. That might’ve ended the game. Instead it became the second fumble recovery for Luke Zhemke, who also recovered one in his end zone.
Now on defense, Independence got a big sack from Elyjah Jackson that forced a fourth-and-8 after the turnover, but a pass interference and another big run from Rule got the Knights to the Independence 20.
Rule, though, didn’t return to the game, missing the final seven plays, including a fourth-down run for a first down and a fourth-down touchdown pass from Christian QB Elliott Newcombe, who was making his first start.
And if not for Robinson’s big sack, Newcome and the Knights might’ve won.
Notable: Independence running back Travis Hill, filling in for the injured Jones, had 25 carries for 156 yards and a touchdown. QB Jared Street completed 14 of 22 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. He ran seven times for 70 yards.

Friday’s roundup
No. 1 Hough 17, Highland Springs (VA) 14: Ethan Royal connected with Jayden White on a 37-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter, and Hough’s defense made several key plays in the final quarter to preserve a victory over one of the Richmond area’s top teams.
Royal and White also connected on a touchdown pass in the second quarter, giving the Huskies (3-0) a 10-0 lead. They earlier got a field goal from Piercon Selland. Highland Springs had taken a 14-10 lead on a pick-6 midway in the third quarter, but Hough battled back.
In the fourth quarter, Highland Springs drove to the Hough 33, but the drive stalled. Hough then fumbled the ball away at its 42 with seven minutes left, and the host Springers drove to the Hough 26. But a 43-yard field goal went wide.
Highland Springs had one more chance, picking off a Hough pass with three minutes left. The Springers drove to the Hough 31, but the Huskies’ defense recorded two straight sacks and pushed the hosts out of field goal range.
Grayson (GA) 63, No. 3 Mallard Creek 13: The Mavericks (2-1) ran into a buzzsaw in Loganville, Ga., falling to the nation’s No. 5-ranked team. The host Rams (4-0) raced to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and were up 35-0 at halftime. Mallard Creek scored twice in the third quarter but could never get closer. Grayson is a defending state champion in Georgia and has won the state title four times.
Clover 21, No. 7 Palisades 19: The visiting Blue Eagles scored on a 9-yard run with 25 seconds left and handed the Pumas their first loss in three games. Palisades had gone ahead 19-14 with a touchdown run just two minutes earlier.
No. 9 South Point 34, T.C. Roberson 6: Kaveaun Pless scored on two runs, and Patrick Blee, Cayden Rumph and Walker Spares added touchdown runs in the Raiders’ (3-0) road victory.
No. 10 Ashbrook 21, Northwest Cabarrus 17: Savion Lindsay ran 15 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter, giving Ashbrook a 21-17 lead, and the Green Wave hung on. Northwest Cabarrus had taken a 17-14 lead earlier in the third quarter on Hudson Irwin’s 25-yard pass to Ja’Ziyah McLean.
No. 12 Mooresville 52, A.L. Brown 13: Blue Devils’ quarterback Brody Norman was perfect Friday night. He completed 13-of-13 passes for 273 yards and five touchdowns, as Mooresville improved to 2-1. Norman threw two scoring passes each to Gavin Barber and Dominic Morin, and Ja’Darius McCombs ran for a pair of touchdowns.
A.L. Brown’s A.J. Settles fired a 66-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Christopher.
No. 14 Statesville 24, Hopewell 21: Joshua Ruiz-Chavez kicked a 36-yard field goal with five minutes left, and the host Greyhounds (3-0) remained unbeaten. Hopewell had tied the game 21-all on a touchdown run and two-point conversion with seven minutes left.
No. 15 East Lincoln 49, Newton-Conover 21: The Mustangs opened Catawba Valley 3A/4A/5A play with a big victory. Grant Lawless threw four touchdown passes, Jalen Fletcher ran for a pair of scores, and Jaxon Dollar scored on a run and a pass reception for the victors (3-0, 1-0).
Other games involving Mecklenburg teams:
Ardrey Kell 15, Marvin Ridge 3: Jared Curtis threw a 45-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter, giving the visiting Knights a 9-0 lead and all the points they needed for a victory. Ardrey Kell added a touchdown in the third quarter.
Charlotte Country Day 31, Ben Smith 15: Quarterback Achilles Morales completed 11-of-20 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns, and Braylon Clark caught three passes for 100 yards, as the Buccaneers improved to 3-0.
Charlotte Latin 63, SouthLake Christian 0: Troy Logan threw two touchdown passes, and De’Jon Douglas and Banks Cutter ran for a pair of scores, as the Hawks (3-0) rolled to a lopsided victory.
East Mecklenburg 21, Garinger 16: James Bailey scored on an 11-yard run with 6:22 left in the game, giving the host Eagles the winning points in this game. Zykerion Pharr scored on a 55-yard pass from Tristan Murphy with 4:30 left, as Garinger cut the deficit to five points. It was Pharr’s second touchdown of the game.
Tyler Willis and Collin Hawkins also scored for East Mecklenburg.
Forest Hills 36, Community School of Davidson 25: Kylan Polk scored on runs of 5, 1, 27 and 38 yards, and the visiting Yellow Jackets (3-0) held off the Spartans. Ty Sigler threw three touchdown passes for the Spartans, connecting twice with Sam Mack. Liam Carniero added a 49-yard field goal.
Hickory Grove Christian 27, South Wake Lions 0: Jaxon Lee completed 7-of-10 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns, as the Lions improved to 3-0. Noah Belote had a 55-yard touchdown catch and several pass break-ups on defense. Reed Rhodes also had a touchdown catch and added two sacks on defense.
Hunter Huss 11, North Mecklenburg 7: The Huskies took a 5-0 first-quarter lead on a safety and field goal, but the Vikings rallied for a 7-5 lead on a touchdown run late in the third quarter. Huss came back with a touchdown run midway in the fourth quarter and hung on.
Irmo (SC) 42, Butler 14: Defensive end Jaiden Bryant scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets’ win. Irmo moved to 3-0 while Butler is now 2-1.
Bryant had an interception return for a TD and also a fumble return. The junior also had three sacks. QB Drevon Dopson had two TD passes for Irmo. Maleek Miller ran for a pair of scores and caught a TD pass. Jay Eady had a TD catch.
Lake Norman Charter 30, North Rowan 26: Haze Dodson ran for three touchdowns, and Lake Norman Charter held on for a nonconference victory.
Langtree Charter 27, Bonnie Cone Leadership 24: The host Lions, in their first year of varsity football, scored their first victory, as Liam Floyd dashed 24 yards for a touchdown with four minutes left. Bonnie Cone had taken a 24-21 lead midway in the fourth quarter on Cameron White’s 90-yard fumble return.
Rocky River 22, Berry Academy 7: Elijah Phillips scored on a pick-6, and quarterback David Echevarria clinched the victory by scoring on a 1-yard run with 6:50 left.
Elsewhere in the area:
Burns 52, East Gaston 0: The Bulldogs got touchdown runs of 27, 17 and 71 yards from Kolton Pryor and pummeled East Gaston in a Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A game.
Jesse Carson 41, Pine Lake Prep 0: Griffin Barber threw two first-half touchdown passes, as Carson blanked the Pride.
Piedmont 47, South Rowan 7: The Panthers raced to a 40-0 halftime lead and improved to 2-1, for their best start in several seasons.
Union Academy 44, Lincoln Charter 42: Union Academy went up 44-34 with one minute left on Michael Donato’s 5-yard touchdown run. But the high-scoring Eagles, in their first season of varsity football, scored with 20 seconds left on Braydon Walden’s 10-yard run and Walden’s two-point conversion run.
West Forsyth 45, Porter Ridge 14: Mozes Morris and Braylen Morrow each ran for a pair of touchdowns, as West Forsyth handed the Pirates their first loss in three games. Porter Ridge fell behind 19-7 but closed to 19-14 early in the third quarter on Raishawn Elmore’s 72-yard kickoff return. But Haines Robitzer fired a 61-yard touchdown pass to Jailyn Moore, and the Titans pulled away.
Son of NFL legend battling doubters and pain at Providence Day
At Providence Day School, Steele Fletcher, the son of Washington Commanders’ legend London Fletcher, is off to a great start in his junior season.
It’s been a year since he lost his mother to breast cancer, suddenly, and Steele Fletcher — an undersized wide receiver with Division-I offers — credits his teammates, and his dad, with helping him get through it.
“My teammates, they were big,” Steele Fletcher said. “They were someone to lean on. Some of them came to check on me the same day. Like, they were a big support system for me during that time. They made me feel supported, like there was somebody there for me. Like, it’s bigger than football.”
Ejection, sportsmanship becoming an issue statewide
After the first week of the 2025 high school football, NCHSAA spokesperson Brandon Moree sent out a statistic showing a disturbingly high number of ejections for teams in a two-day period.
That trend is only continuing.
Moree reported Tuesday morning that from Thursday, Aug. 28 until Sept. 2, there were 30 additional ejections from NCHSAA contests.
Since play began Aug. 11, there have been 102 across all sports.
The NCHSAA rules call for a suspension for the athlete for the next game. A second ejection earns a student-athlete probation and a two-game suspension. A third ejection results in a 365-day suspension for a student-athlete.
A suspended coach cannot coach and faces the same leveling up of penalties.
Advice? Don’t hurt your team by saying or doing something that’s going to get you benched. It’s not worth it.

Raleigh-area update: Leesville Road rolls
Leesville Road scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back in a lopsided, 50-3 win over visiting Heritage High School of Wake Forest on Friday night.
With the win, the Pride lifted its record to 2-1 in non-league play to start the 2025 season. Leesville Road begins play in the Cap 8A conference next week, with a home game against Wakefield.
Devin Goldston, a multi-position, multi-sport athlete at Leesville Road who has committed to Wake Forest for football, had a solid game for the Pride in the win, registering a pair of long touchdowns. Damacio Cueto also scored, and the Leesville Road defense got in on the scoring action, producing a safety in the fourth quarter.
After winning its opening game of the season against Wakefield, Heritage couldn’t find the end zone for a second consecutive game, following a 36-0 shutout loss to Millbrook a week earlier.
The Huskies will try again for a second win on the season next week when they host Williams of Burlington.
