Friday’s rewind: NC scores, how The Sweet 16 fared, next week’s schedule

Week 6 got off to a rainy start, but most games in the Charlotte area got off.

A few thoughts:

1) West Charlotte got the signature win it had been looking for, after coming up just short against Grimsley and South Pointe. The Lions broke out some big plays and got a convincing 32-9 decision at nationally ranked Mallard Creek.

2) South Meck won its fifth straight game on the road Friday, beating Hopewell 46-20. More below.

3) Butler ended a three-game losing streak, beating Chambers 23-12 in its Power 6 conference opener.

4) East Mecklenburg has rarely been .500 or better this deep into a season, but the Eagles are 3-3 after Friday’s 19-13 win over Ballantyne Ridge. The Eagles have won three of their last four games, losing only to that hot South Mecklenburg team.

South Meck runs away from Hopewell

Carter Gillis threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more Friday night, as streaking South Mecklenburg won its fifth straight game, 46-20 over host Hopewell.

The Sabres (5-1, 1-0 Greater Charlotte 7A/8A) raced to a 25-0 halftime lead and coasted past the Titans (2-4, 0-1).

Callaway Williams had a big night for South Mecklenburg, catching a pair of touchdown passes and scoring on a 57-yard interception return.

Gillis and Williams connected on a 58-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, but Hopewell was trailing only 7-0 midway in the second period.

The Sabres scored three times in the final five minutes of the half, on Amir Gillespie’s 11-yard run, on a 12-yard pass from Gillis to Williams, and then on Williams’ pick-6 with 13 seconds left in the half. Hopewell got on the scoreboard early in the third quarter on a short run by Zac Jones.

But the Sabres answered two minutes later with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Gillis to Moon. South Mecklenburg dropped its season-opener to Charlotte Catholic but hasn’t lost since. The Sabres host West Mecklenburg next Friday. Hopewell is off next week and travels to Myers Park on Oct. 10.

No. 2 Hough 43, West Mecklenburg 0 – Ethan Royal threw five touchdown passes, and the Huskies (6-0, 1-0) opened their Greater Charlotte 7A/8A schedule in style.

No. 9 East Lincoln 57, Bunker Hill 0 – Grant Lawless threw three first-half touchdown passes, and the Mustangs (6-0, 4-0 Western Foothills 4A/5A) remained unbeaten.

No. 10 Ashbrook 44, North Gaston 0 – A.J. McClain threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score in the first half, and Makylin Hinton returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown shortly before halftime. The Green Wave (6-0, 3-0 Big South 5A/6A) scored all their points in the first half.

Kaveaun Pless ran for three more South Point touchdowns, and Cayden Rumph had a pair of scoring runs for the Raiders.

Charlotte Catholic 14, No. 13 Porter Ridge 13 (OT) – Charlotte Catholic tied this Southern Carolina 6A/7A game on Garrett Nowlan’s 5-yard touchdown run with 2:11 left in regulation, then won in overtime.

Porter Ridge (4-2, 1-1) took a 7-0 lead midway in the second quarter on Raishawn Elmore’s 31-yard touchdown run, and the teams played scoreless ball until Nowlan’s touchdown.

The Pirates got the ball first in overtime and scored on a 3-yard run by Elmore, but they missed the conversion. Charlotte Catholic evened the score, when Chase Kummer sneaked into the end zone from 1 yard out on fourth down. The Cougars then won on Aidan Flynn’s conversion kick.

No. 14 Northwest Cabarrus 35, East Rowan 7 — Titus Troy carried 20 times for 139 yards and scored three touchdowns, as the Trojans (4-1, 2-0) kept pace with Jay M. Robinson atop the South Piedmont 4A/5A.

MECKLENBURG TEAMS

Charlotte Christian 61, Ravenscroft School 0 – Elliot Newcomb threw two first-quarter touchdown passes and had another scoring toss in the second half. Tate Estep return a punt 60 yards for a Knights’ touchdown early in the second quarter. Charlotte Christian is now 2-3.

Charlotte Latin 42, Langtree Charter 0 – The Hawks (6-0) remained unbeaten, as Troy Logan threw a pair of touchdown passes, and Banks Cutter scored on a run and a 60-yard pass from Logan. Charlotte Latin led 35-0 at halftime.

Community School of Davidson 28, Christ the King 21 – Tyler Johnson fired a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jack Browning with 11 minutes left, and the Spartans (2-3, 1-0 Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A) rallied past the Crusaders (4-2, 1-1).

Community School of Davidson led 7-0 on Nixon Willis’ touchdown run, but the Crusaders went up 3-7 on two touchdown runs by Brennen Wallace.

The Spartans took a 14-13 lead late in the first half on a 14-yard run by Johnson, then increased the lead to 21-13 on a 5-yard run by Nixon Willis. Christ the King tied the game with 30 seconds left in the third quarter, on Jamison Ehret’s 1-yard run and Carter Stevens’ conversion run.

Corvian Community 52, Lincoln Charter 6 – The Cardinals (2-0, 4-1) walloped the Eagles (2-4, 0-2) in a game played at Richardson Stadium on the UNC Charlotte campus.

Demond Walker scored on a touchdown catch and an 82-yard kickoff return. Tyson Douglas-Brown threw for two touchdowns, and Kelvin Stinson ran for two more.

East Mecklenburg 19, Ballantyne Ridge 13 – James Bailey scored two touchdowns, and Aiden Donnelly ran 92 yards for a score, as the Eagles (3-3, 1-0 Southwestern 7A/8A) won their conference opener.

Donnelly also threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Bailey.

Ballantyne Ridge (1-5, 0-1) reached the East Mecklenburg 39 in the closing minutes, but the Wolves’ drive stalled.

Harrells Christian 51, Covenant Day 21 – Harrells Christian jumped to a 38-0 halftime lead.

Lake Norman Charter 20, Pine Lake Prep 7 – Lake Norman Charter (3-3, 1-1 Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A) trailed the Pride (1-5, 1-1) 7-0 at halftime but scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

North Rowan 53, Bonnie Cone Leadership 0 – The host Cavaliers (2-3, 2-0 Catawba-Yadkin 1A/2A/3A) raced to a 47-0 halftime lead over Bonnie Cone Academy (0-5, 0-2).

SouthLake Christian 49, Anderson (SC) Cavaliers 21 – Trailing 16-14 at halftime, the Eagles outscored the host Cavaliers 28-0 in the third quarter and pulled away. Malachi Gwyn scored on three short touchdown runs for SouthLake Christian.

OTHER AREA GAMES

Forest Hills 25, Parkwood 21 – Kylan Polk ran 10 yards for a touchdown with two minutes left, and the Yellow Jackets (6-0, 1-0) beat Parkwood (1-5, 0-1) in the teams’ Rocky River 4A/5A opener.

Parkwood scored on two touchdown passes in the second half for a 21-12 lead, but Polk threw a scoring pass with five minutes left in the game, closing the gap to 21-18.

A bad punt by Parkwood gave the Yellow Jackets good field position for their winning drive.

Jay M. Robinson 14, Salisbury 0 – Aury Greenfield threw one first-quarter touchdown pass and ran for another, as the Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0 Southern Piedmont 4A/5A) won this defensive struggle.

But Farmer threw another touchdown pass and ran for two more scored, as Shelby pulled away.
