NCISAA state championship central: Private school fall sports champions named
The N.C. Independent Schools hosted state championships across multiple sports Saturday. We’ve got the coverage and scores:
Charlotte Country Day wins 16th field hockey title
Charlotte Country Day beat rival Charlotte Latin, 1-0, to win the NCISAA field hockey championship. The Bucs finish 20-1.
North Raleigh Christian stops Latin in volleyball final
North Raleigh Christian’s dominance of North Carolina’s private school volleyball continued as the Knights downed Charlotte Latin 3-1 for the NCISAA 4A state championship.
It was the second straight title for the Knights, and their 10th in the last 11 years. North Raleigh Christian has won the NCISAA’s big-school volleyball title every year since 2015 except in 2023, when the Knights finished second to Cannon School.
Set scores in Saturday’s final at Carmel Christian were 25-19, 25-27, 25-21 and 25-21.
Charlotte Latin (29-2) led early in the first set, but North Raleigh Christian (21-6) rallied from a 6-5 deficit to a 19-11 lead. The Hawks rallied briefly, but the Knights won it on a kill by Jenna Stefansky.
North Raleigh Christian surged ahead in the second set and led 11-5 and 12-7. But the Hawks battled back and tied the set at 21-all. The Knights scored the next three points, but Charlotte Latin rallied again and won the final two points for the victory. Charlotte Latin’s Allie Haynie had several big plays down the stretch.
The Hawks led 16-15 in Set 3, but North Raleigh Christian’s strength on the net began to take a toll, and the Knights outscored Charlotte Latin 10-5 down the stretch.
Charlotte Latin led the fourth set 12-11 before the Knights rallied. The state championship-winning point came when Lilly Flythe’s shot bounced off a Charlotte Latin player on the back line and went out of bounds.
The Hawks’ only other loss this season came against Charlotte Country Day in late September.
Latin and North Raleigh Christian met earlier this season, with the Hawks winning 3-1.
Covenant Day soccer falls in state final
After coming into the playoffs on a two-game losing streak, Covenant Day beat Charlotte Latin on penalty kicks, and stopped High Point’s Wesleyan Academy, 2-1, to reach the state final round.
But playing at home Saturday, Covenant Day’s playoff run came to an end.
The Lions lost, 2-1, to Arden’s Christ School in the state final.
Covenant Day hosted the finals for the second straight season. In 2024, Rabun Gap (GA) beat the Lions 1-0 for the championship.
Christ School (19-1) and Covenant Day (15-5-1) played for the second time this season on Saturday. Covenant Day won, 5-4, on penalty kicks in August.
Charlotte Latin gets historic girls’ golf win
The Charlotte Latin girls’ golf team won its first NCISAA state championship this week, just months after the boys’ team won a third straight state championship in May.
Charlotte Latin won the title on a playoff hole to top rival Providence Day. Providence Day beat Latin to win the CISAA conference championship a week earlier.
In the state finals, Charlotte Latin led Providence Day by 13 shots after the first day of play Monday at the Greensboro National Golf Club. But Providence Day rallied on Tuesday, making up seven shots on the front nine. Heading into the 18th hole, Charlotte Latin actually trailed by two shots.
But Kelsey Sciacca made an eagle on 18 from the fairway to tie and force the playoff hole.
All five players on both teams went back to 18, where Latin secured the win and left Sciacca celebrating with Ella Sciacca, Cecilia Clifton, Annabelle Poovey and Drue Amin.
Davidson Day falls in volleyball
Davidson Day won the opening set, but the Patriots ultimately went down in a 3-1 loss to Wake Christian in the NCISAA 3A girls’volleyball state finals.
The Patriots (18-11) took the first set 25-21 and led through much of the second set before the Bulldogs (26-7) rallied for a 25-23 victory.
Wake Christian completed the victory by winning 21-15 and 25-17 in the final two sets.
Charlotte Country Day wins tennis
Charlotte Country Day beat Durham Academy, 5-4, in the 4A tennis finals.
Durham Academy was in the championship round for the first time since 2019.
Country Day (16-4) won the championship after going undefeated in the 2024 season and beating rival Providence Day in the finals.
Gaston Day volleyball repeats as state champions
Gaston Day beat St. Thomas More, 3-2, to repeat as 2A volleyball champions Saturday.
Gaston Day (18-2) was led by Kendyl Taylor (43 kills, 28 digs, two aces, two blocks), Ava Blanton (35 digs, three aces), Clara Wallwork (seven kills, 16 digs, two blocks, two aces) and Mary Ellen Lovelace (48 assists, 26 digs)
