Queen’s Grant boys, girls get season-opening basketball wins at Victory Christian

Queen’s Grant’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are contenders to win NCHSAA state championships this season, and both teams got off to good starts Monday.

The Queen’s Grant girls blew out Victory Christian, the reigning N.C. 1A private school state champions, winning 56-36. The Queen’s Grant boys withstood a 3-point shooting barrage from the Kings, the reigning private 1A boys’ state champs, to win 55-50.

In the boys’ game, Victory Christian made 10 3-points, which offset a 28-point performance by Queen’s Grant 6-9 sophomore forward Chase Smith.

Smith scored 15 of his team’s first 17 points and Queen’s Grant led 17-4 after the first quarter.

But in the second, Smith sat with foul trouble, and the Kings started making 3s, led by Deshawn Coulter. At halftime, Victory trailed 24-21.

When Smith came back after halftime, Queen’s Grant got rolling again, going up 50-39, before Victory ralied behind Landon Johnson and Carlos Marshall and a clutch three from Coulter with 17 second left, to cut the lead to 53-50.

Queen’s Grant point guard Bobby Montgomery sealed the game, however, with a pair of free throws late.

“It was just staying together as one,” Smith said. “Talking on defense, always communicating, knowing where each other are at all times, it makes it easier playing as a unit, rather than being spread apart.”

Unlike the boys’, Queen’s Grant girls got going early and never let up in a 20-point win. Queen’s Grant led 36-16 at halftime.

Queens Grant sophomore guard Zi’Miya Bynum led the way with 27 points. Misa Garris added 16.

The Stallions played lock down defense that limited Victory Christian’s ability to get clean looks at the basket and limited their shot attempts.

Queens Grant forced multiple turnovers that led to fastbreak points all game.
