Friday’s girls’ rewind: North Meck stops West Charlotte, ties Mallard Creek for title
North Mecklenburg High’s girls basketball team, No. 2 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll and No. 7 in the statewide Class 7A poll, was absolutely dominating as it wrapped up a share of the Meck Power Six 7A/8A conference title with Friday’s 65-18 win over visiting West Charlotte.
The Vikings (22-2, 9-1) — who shared the title with Mallard Creek — ended any doubt about the game’s outcome with a suffocating first 4½ minutes of defense.
North Mecklenburg scored the game’s first 17 points, while forcing West Charlotte (12-11, 3-7) into 14 turnovers and two missed shots.
Overall, the Vikings forced West Charlotte into 32 turnovers and 6-of-32 field goal shooting in a game shortened by the mercy rule with a running clock for the entire second half.
Junior Lenise Joseph scored 17 points and was the game’s lone double-figure scorer.
Friday’s girls’ #BIG5 top performers
Kiara Anderson, Mallard Creek: Anderson had a game-high 14 points in a 62-26 win over Chambers that earned the Mavericks a share of the Meck Power Six conference title.
Za’Miya Bynum, Queen’s Grant: In a 70-15 win over N.C. Science & Math Morganton, Bynum finished with 22 points, 10 steals, four assists, three rebounds and a block.
Ma-Kaela Gidney, Hickory Ridge: In a 73-17 win over Olympic, Gidney finished with 32 points and seven steals. In the game, she became the all-time scoring leader in school history. Gidney now has 1,568 career points.
Myajah Nix, Central Cabarrus: In a 69-45 win over Harding, Nix had 33 points and 16 rebounds. Senior Jahnae Duncan chipped in with 11 points, seven assists.
Kylie Riggenbach, Lincoln Charter: Riggenbach had a game-high 21 points in the Catawba Shores conference championship game. Lincoln Charter beat Lake Norman Charter 64-45.
Mallard Creek ties North Meck for Power Six title
Mallard Creek earned a share of the Meck Power Six league title with a 62-26 win over Chambers.
The Mavericks (19-5, 9-1) outscored Chambers 17-4 in the second quarter to break the game open.
Kiara Anderson (14 points) and My’Asia Young (11) led the Mavericks.
South Meck tops Myers Park, wins league title
South Mecklenburg, No. 12 in The Sweet 16, got 13 points and 10 rebounds from Chloe Grant in a 49-42 win over Myers Park in the Greater Charlotte conference championship game.
The Sabres (20-4, 10-0) won their seventh straight game and beat Myers Park (17-7, 8-2) for the second time this season.
If Myers Park had won, the Mustangs would’ve shared the regular-season title with their rival. Arianna Shaw led the Mustangs with 15 points.
Ardrey Kell stops Providence, wins league title
Ardrey Kell got 26 points from Autumn Washington and 19 from Imani Shelton in Friday’s 56-48 win over Providence.
The Knights (21-3, 10-0) won their 15th straight game and finished an unbeaten run through league play.
Anna Fillnow had 20 points to lead the Panthers (16-7, 8-2), who would’ve tied for the league title with a win.
Lincoln Charter wins Catawba Shores title
Lincoln Charter won its 11th straight game Friday, blitzing Lske Norman Charter, 66-45, to win the Catawba Shores league title.
Lincoln Charter (19-4, 14-0) finished an unbeaten run through conference with its second win over Lake Norman Charter this season. Lake Norman Charter (21-2, 12-2) would’ve tied for the league title with a win.
On Friday, Lincoln Charter led 21-8 after the first quarter and never really let up. Kylie and Taylor Riggenbach combined for 36 points and Camryn David had 12.
