Providence Day boys hold off Carmel rally heads to state final
For the last two years, Providence Day and Carmel Christian have waged epic battles for the right to advance to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state title game.
A year ago, Carmel Christian rallied from deficits in the three of the game’s four quarters and both overtime periods before edging Providence Day 73-65 in double-overtime.
On Tuesday, the Chargers returned the favor by holding off a Carmel Christian second half rally in an 80-75 victory in front of a vocal, packed house at Providence Day’s Mosack Athletic Center.
“To get to a state championship, you’ve got to earn it,” Providence Day coach Jonathan McIntyre said. “We had to do that tonight.”
The Chargers (23-6) will meet Forsyth Country Day (28-3) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Greensboro Novant Health Field House for the 2026 NCISAA Class 4A championship.
To do so took surviving the Cougars’ (14-12) hot shooting second half after Providence Day built as much as a 48-27 lead with 6:15 to play in the third quarter.
Carmel Christian missed its first six 3-pointers and 12 of its first 13 before catching fire in a 30-point third quarter.
In that third quarter, the Cougars hit seven of nine 3-pointers and also converted all three free throws when one of their sharpshooters was fouled on a 3-point attempt.
“I knew they could come back,” McIntyre said. “Our effort was phenomenal. And we made them work for everything. They just made some really tough shots.”
To survive the surge that allowed Carmel Christian to close within 60-55 by the end of the third quarter, 75-69 with 1:02 to play and 79-75 with 13 seconds left, McIntyre said he reminded his team of his simple game plan.

Providence Day School’s veteran girls basketball coach Josh Springer said his team motto from the start of offseason drills last summer was “Unfinished Business.”
