UNC Asheville pushes past Winthrop in baseball win
The Winthrop Eagles’ baseball team lost Game 3 of the Big South Conference Series against UNC Asheville 10-7 Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field, after Winthrop clinched the series with a doubleheader sweep yesterday.
With the loss, Winthrop is now 21-20 (8-7 BSC) on the season, while UNC Asheville improves to 14-27 (5-10 BSC).
Winthrop struck first in the top of the 2nd when Mitch Spires hit a sacrifice fly scoring Roger Gonzalez who was previously walked.
The Bulldogs quickly responded to tie the game at 1-1 in the second.
UNC Asheville extended to a 5-1 lead in the third when they scored four runs on four hits, chasing Eagles’ starter Thad Harris.
Gonzalez hit his second homer of the series in the fourth to cut the Asheville lead to 5-2.
But the Bulldogs added another four runs in the bottom of the inning off three hits and an additional run in the eighth.
Winthrop put up two runs on three hits in the top of the 6th. Mark Lowrie and Jace Whitley both singled and were later sent home on a Spires double.
The Eagles added another two runs in the seventh when Lowrie singled to left field scoring Derron Davis. After singling to right field, Anthony Paulsen scored on a fielding error cutting the deficit to 9-6. Winthrop added a late run in the ninth to end the game’s scoring.
Riley Arnone was given the loss after four relief innings. The Eagles will continue their road swing when they travel to face Davidson this Tuesday at the Wilson Field at 6 p.m.
