Former Gamecock running back dies at 58
Former South Carolina running back Spencer Vernell Clark died on May 6. The 58-year-old Clark died at his home in Columbia after a short illness, according to an obituary on Legacy.com.
Clark played for the Gamecocks from 1976-79, leading the team in rushing in 1977. He finished his career rushing for 1,652 yards on 319 carries, an average of 5.2 yards per attempt. He’s 22nd on the Gamecocks all-time rushing list.
Clark, born March 3, 1958 in Fleming, graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Science Degree in criminal justice. Clark worked for the Department of Justice and the U.S. Marshals Services before several career changes. Most recently, he was currently the owner of SVC Consulting Services, LLC and spent the the past 22 years in Columbia.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Riceboro Youth Center, 5649 South Coastal Highway, Riceboro, Ga. Visitation from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service and burial will be in the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Fleming, Ga.
