Charlotte 49ers, North Carolina schedule home-and-home football series
After years of trying, the Charlotte 49ers announced a home-and-home football series with North Carolina in 2024 and 2025.
The games are scheduled for Sept. 7, 2024, at UNC’s Kenan Stadium and Sept. 6, 2025, at Charlotte’s Richardson Stadium.
The 49ers and Tar Heels have been trying to schedule each other since Charlotte started its football program in 2013. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, a game between Charlotte and North Carolina to open the 2016 season at Bank of America Stadium was nearly set before the deal fell through.
“We are excited that we are able to announce this series, both for our program and our fans,” 49ers athletics director Judy Rose said in a statement. “This is another step in the many that we have taken in the development of our program. With our move to the FBS and into Conference USA, we have continued to upgrade our schedule. Today is another important step.”
The 49ers, who are in their first season as an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, have games already lined up with “Power 5” conference teams for several seasons, including road games against Kentucky this season, Louisville (2016), Kansas State (’17), Tennessee (’18), Clemson (’19) and Duke (’20). The Blue Devils will play at Charlotte in 2021.
The 49ers will also face Appalachian State at home in 2018 and in Boone in 2019.
