Balanced scoring, three-point shooting propels Winthrop past Alabama State.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Winthrop had five players scoring in double figures Saturday as the Eagles defeated Alabama State 88-80.

Winthrop’s record inproves to 6-4. Alabama State fell to 0-10.

Anders Broman scored 19 points, pulled three rebounds and snatched two steals to lead Winthrop. He was followed by teammates Bjorn Broman (18 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals) and Josh Ferguson (14 points, 13 rebounds and three assists), Nych Smith (12 points), and Jermaine Ukaegbu (10 points).

The teams started slowly before Alabama State took a 5-0 lead and ultimately pushed the lead to 10-2 early in the first half. Then, with 10:20 before the half and trailing 18-9, Winthrop went on a 7-0 run, ignited by a Josh Ferguson Dunk, then five straight points from Anderson Broman. The Eagles finished the half with a 10-3 run to pull within a 35-31 score at the half.

Winthrop opened the second half with a 22-6 run, shooting nine of 10 from the field. Midway through the second half, Winthrop endured a three-minute drought that was ended by a three-pointer from Bjorn Broman.

Winthrop now has four consecutive games in which the Eagles have shot 50 percent or better from the field. The Eagles also now have a string of six consecutive games in which they have hit at least 10 three-point shots. The road win was the 15th in 21 outings for Winthrop.
