Piedmont Pride take three out of four weekend games from SBA Bones

The Piedmont Pride took three out of four games from SBA Bones last weekend to extend its lead in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League standings.

Joe Hudak’s Pride - playing home games at Winthrop Ballpark - is now 16-5, while the Bones dropped to 12-7. The Pride split Friday’s doubleheader with an 8-0 win followed by an 8-6 loss, before taking both games Saturday evening at Winthrop, 11-4 and 6-3.

“It was a very good weekend for us against a very good opponent,” Hudak said. “I thought the keys to the weekend were good pitching and timely hitting. Jason Goe really set the tone on the mound in game one.”

Goe - from Morehead State - threw a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out seven batters to push his record to 4-0.

“Jason has gotten better every time out,” said Hudak. “He’s worked really hard on his off-speed pitches, and his slider and change-up were very good tonight.”

After dropping Friday’s nightcap, the Pride got back in the win column Saturday, scoring three in the fourth inning and four in the sixth inning to knock off the Bones 11-4. Gardner-Webb’s Chandler Redmond hit a three-run homer and knocked in four runs to lead the offensive effort.

Relief pitcher Willis Dobison threw 3.6 solid innings in the second game Saturday to wrap up another win and a successful weekend.

The Pride are on the road the rest of this week, before a doubleheader Saturday at Winthrop beginning at 5 p.m.
