Eagle women look for first win at ETSU Sunday
The Winthrop women will need Erica Williams to keep scoring and strong contributions from freshman Sunday as the team works to get its first win of the season at East Tennessee State.
The 2 p.m. game will be broadcast on 104.1 The Bridge and streamed live on ESPN3.
Winthrop is 1-2 going into the contest while ETSU is 1-1 in the early going. Sunday’s game will mark the ninth meeting all-time between the two schools. ETSU owns a 5-3 lead in the series, including a 66-61 win in the last meeting which came 24 years ago in the Marshall Invitational.
Winthrop has been led in the first three games by senior forward Williams (Rex, Ga.) who is averaging 20.3 points and 6.5 rebounds. She is coming off a career-high scoring performance as she dropped in 28 points on 10 of 18 shooting against College of Charleston on Wednesday night.
The Eagles have also gotten solid contributions from a group of freshmen, including point guard Danyael Goodhope (Virginia Beach, Va.) who is averaging 11 points and 3.3 assists, and forward/center Teylahna Green (Newark, N.J.), who has come off the bench in each game to average 10.7 rebounds.
Following the ETSU game, Winthrop will prepare for three games in the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. They will face 12th ranked Florida State on Thanksgiving Day before meeting Michigan on Nov. 25 and Gonzaga on Nov. 26.
The Eagles return home on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to host Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. in the Winthrop Coliseum.
