Kasmarik continues to rake in weekly awards for Winthrop lacrosse
Winthrop attacker Jenna Kasmarik has been named the Big South women’s lacrosse offensive player of the week, while Eagles’ goalkeeper Alaina Girani is the defensive player of the week for games played March 2-9.
It marks the third time in five weeks this season that Kasmarik has earned the attacking player weekly award while Girani has earned her second Big South honor, having garnered the freshman of the week award two weeks ago.
Kasmarik (Suwanee, Ga.) continued her consistent offensive performance Saturday against Vermont, totaling six points on five goals and one assist. She got Winthrop on the board less than two minutes into the game and scored three first-half goals, helping the Eagles to a 7-2 lead at the break. She also had two draw controls and picked up one ground ball.
Girani (Wirtz, Va.) had an outstanding performance against Vermont, allowing just four goals to a Catamount team who had averaged nearly 11 goals per game this season. She finished with seven saves and a 63.6 save percentage on the day. Girani also caused one turnover and picked up five ground balls.
John Sung’s Eagles (6-1), the only team in the eight-team Big South with more than two wins, start a four-game road swing this weekend when they make a cross-country trip to California. Winthrop will face Fresno State Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. (EST).
