Winthrop’s Humberg selected as Big South women’s tennis freshman of the week
Winthrop women’s tennis player Mariana Humberg has been selected as the Big South Conference freshman of the week for matches played March 2 to 8.
Humberg, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, posted 4-0 records in singles and doubles play for the week. Alongside Alice Garcia at the No. 1 doubles position, Humberg posted victories against East Tennessee State (8-5), Longwood (8-1), Charleston Southern (8-2), and Radford (8-2). Humberg was victorious at No. 4 singles against ETSU (6-2, 2-6, 6-4), Charleston Southern (6-4, 6-2), and against Longwood due to opponent retiring. Humberg played at No. 3 singles against Radford winning 6-1, 6-4.
This is the second time this season Humberg has taken weekly freshman honors. The Eagles will be back in action this Thursday, March 12 against Virginia Commonwealth at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts beginning at 2 p.m.
