Winthrop’s Seabolt wins fourth college golf tournament of the season

Zach Seabolt finished in a three-way tie for medalist honors at the 2015 Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday General Hackler Championship which was held at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club last weekend.

The sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., finished with a 54-hole score of 4-under par 212 (67-73-72) to tie North Florida's Joey Petronia, and Nick Volte from Iowa State. Volte's second round 65 set a course record on the par-72, 7,233-yard layout. North Florida captured the team title, shooting a 3-under 861

For Seabolt, this tournament performance was his fourth first place finish of the 2014-15 season and his second straight after he captured the Jones Invitational in California two weeks ago.

As a team, Winthrop finished ninth in the field of 15 schools, shooting a three-day total of 896 (291-307-298). Senior Sam Whitehead tied for 41st at 225 (72-79-74). Junior Christian Sease was a shot back and tied for 49th place with 226 (76-75-75). Senior Taylor Dickson shot 233 (76-80-77) to tie for 65th while freshman Andy Horgan placed 80th with a 245 (81-84-80) score.

“The team is still trying to find its way this spring," said Winthrop coach Kevin Pendley. “We are not as consistent as we need to be, but not as far off as it may seem. We just need more consistency through the lineup.

“I am proud of Zach. He played real well the first round and while not as sharp the last 27 holes, he hit some quality shots down the stretch today to have a chance to win. It was another good step for him.”

Winthrop will return to action March 30-31 when the Eagles play in the Hootie At Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C.
