Winthrop freshman golfer Ashley Sloup places 13th in Bearcat Spring Classic

Winthrop freshman women’s golfer Ashley Sloup tied for 13th place to lead the Eagles in the 2015 Bearcat Spring Classic.

Sloup (Southport, N.C.) shot 229 (79-75-75), on the par 72, 6,245-yard Los Colinas Course at Mission Inn Resort. The tournament, hosted by the University of Cincinnati, was originally scheduled to be held in Orlando at the Shingle Creek Golf Club but was switched to the Los Colinas Course due to a scheduling conflict.

Winthrop finished ninth in the 17-team field after turning in rounds of 320-311-311 for a total of 942. Memphis captured the tournament title by shooting 892 to finish 25 shots ahead of second place Jacksonville. The medalist was Danielle Lemek from 11th place Bradley who shot 3-over 219.

In addition to Sloup's performance, the other Winthrop results were: Jennifer Dilger, tied for 21st (81-75-76, 232); Viivi Nuorti, tied for 40th (80-77-81, 238); Rachel Wyatt, tied for 60th (80-84-79, 243); Lucie Walker, 80th (85-87-86, 258).

Winthrop will return to action April 6-7 at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate in Morganton, N.C.
